Maximizing Bedroom Space with Lateral Opening Door Systems

Today in the Sugatsune Blog, we’re spotlighting our LIN-X Series Lateral Opening Door Systems as a solution for aesthetically maximizing bedroom space in your new design project or remodel.

The Bedroom Space Problem

Bedroom space is often at a premium, even in high-end housing. This is especially true when it comes to:

  • Secondary bedrooms and guest rooms as opposed to the master bedroom suite.
  • Apartments, especially in this cost-sensitive era of modern construction.
  • Condominiums where space is physically restricted or prohibitively expensive.
  • Hotel and resort rooms where space efficiency is intrinsic to the business model.
  • Older homes that were built to a less ambitious size to begin with.
  • Staterooms and cabins on ships and boats.

In every case, there’s at least one clear incentive for maximizing bedroom space:

  • Increasing the usable floor space of a small bedroom.
  • Improving space utilization by enabling superior layout and decoration options.
  • Adding amenities within a fixed square footage.
  • Saving money on construction costs by shrinking the footprint of a bedroom.

Doors are a major contributor to the bedroom space problem. They require a lot of clearance, and this space needs to be kept clear in order for the door to be usable.

This is a logical target for innovation, which is where our LIN-X Series enters the picture.

Meet Our LIN-X Series Lateral Opening Door Systems

The LIN-X Series builds upon our Motion Design Tech® concept of improving the motion and usability of doors, panels, and flaps through unique design innovations.

Made Possible by Our MonoFlat LIN-X Hinge®

Featuring our innovative MonoFlat LIN-X Hinge®, our laterally opening door systems eliminate the large footprint of a traditional door as it swings open, maximizing bedroom space.

A door with the LIN-X Hinge will swing out to the side on a very tight radius, with its front side continuing to face you the entire time. In effect, the door moves as though you had picked it up and scooted it off to one side.

But of course, you don’t actually have to do any lifting or scooting yourself. It’s all handled by the hardware and is next to effortless for the end user. This design offers a compelling premium of convenience to your space, and, in conjunction with easy-to-use door handles, knobs, or pulls, also ensures accessibility for users who may be compromised in strength or mobility—all while maximizing bedroom space.

Core Features

In addition to saving space and presenting an attractive aesthetic, both of which we will discuss in greater detail shortly, here are the other core features of LIN-X Series that make it one of our most innovative door systems:

  • Fully Damped: Doors move smoothly and quietly, offering a luxurious experience.
  • Soft-Closing: Doors shut by themselves quietly and softly, with no slamming.
  • Full Access: Doors move aside completely, providing 100% access to the doorway.
  • 4-Way Adjustable: Fine-tune doors for horizontal, vertical, depth, and parallel position.
  • Heavy Duty: Our largest LIN-X1000 model supports doors up to 200 lbs. and 43 inches wide.
  • Durable: All Sugatsune hardware is built to last using smart designs, precision engineering, and quality materials.
  • Multi-Configurable: Doors can open to the left or the right (or both in the case of a double door application), and can be used on both interior and exterior corners.
  • Improved Safety: Laterally opening doors are less likely to accidentally strike someone passing by on the other side.
  • Accessible: As mentioned, these doors are very easy to operate, requiring no great strength or fine motor skills.
  • Convenient and Flexible Installation: LIN-X doors are designed for overlay installation but can be modified for inset installation. In either case, installation is easy and straightforward.

These lateral opening door system features, taken together, offer a compelling value proposition for maximizing bedroom space in many different applications—perhaps including your project.

Main Applications of Lateral Door Motion

Why choose lateral opening door systems over other types of doors? Well, to be clear, we are not claiming that you always should. Other door systems and hardware may offer a better solution in some cases.

Generally speaking, it’s worth considering lateral doors for maximizing bedroom space when:

  1.  Maximizing floor space is more important than maximizing wall space, OR when you are able to mount a lateral door such that when opened, the door rests in front of already-utilized wall space such as flush cabinets.
  2.  You have more space available beside the door than in front of it.
  3.  You are particularly concerned with the doors having a good appearance and remaining out of the way while in the open position.

This leads us to the two main selling points of our LIN-X Series lateral opening door systems: aesthetics and the lateral motion itself. In the context of maximizing bedroom space, both of these selling points interact synergistically.

You Can Shrink and Reshape a Door’s Footprint

In many cases, maximizing bedroom space can be as simple as changing the door on your closet.

LIN-X Series door systems not only partially reduce a door’s footprint but also reshape and relocate it in ways that allow you to better utilize the space.

For example, here are some of the applications for lateral opening door systems:

  • Place beds, chairs, and other furniture closer to the door.
  • Flatten the zone of clearance required when a door is open, allowing for easier movement among two or more people.
  • Keep the door securely out of the way when it is open.

Saving Space Can Look Clean and Elegant

Maximizing bedroom space doesn’t have to result in a cluttered, cramped look.

LIN-X Series Lateral Opening Door Systems help create spaces with a clean and elegant appearance. The doors, when fully opened, sit flush against the wall—staying out of the way while providing textural variety on the wall space in both the open and closed positions.

Also contributing to the beautiful appearance of laterally opening doors is the fact that no top or bottom rails are required, giving a clean appearance when doors are in the open position. Everything is handled by the LIN-X Hinges, which we make available in both matte black and white so as to blend into any color palette.
