FAQs

What are the primary bracket types and designs available for shelving, and how do they differ in terms of installation and aesthetics?

Sugatsune America offers a range of bracket types and designs to accommodate various shelving needs. Common types include wall-mounted brackets. We also offer a range of shelf pilaster and clip systems, wall-mounted brackets and glass standoffs. Sugatsune wall-mounted brackets feature a sleek, low-profile design. You can secure these directly to a wall, providing a minimalist look for wood or glass shelves.

Our shelf-support systems, which include aluminum frame connectors, are more comprehensive. Use these to build multi-tiered or custom shelving units. They offer enhanced stability, perfect for display cases or retail fixtures. Need to mount shelves at a fixed distance from the wall? Our glass standoffs are cylindrical hardware pieces that can be passed through pre-drilled holes. Sugatsune America bracket types are made from high-quality materials that coordinate with any design scheme. Check out our detailed product specifications. There, you’ll find guidance on the required glass thickness and bracket weight capacity. This helps make sure that each installation is safe and secure.

What is a Shelf Standard?

Shelf standards, often called pilasters, are a type of metal track or rail mounted vertically on a wall or within a cabinet using adjustable clips to support shelves. Clips can be snapped into slots or holes in the standard or pilaster, to support shelves at various desired heights.

Typical Features and Uses

Shelf standards are usually made of steel or aluminum and come in various lengths such as 24, 36, 48, or 72 inches to fit different shelving heights and configurations.

They are commonly used in closets, pantries, garages, and commercial displays, enabling flexible, strong support for shelves. Elastomer covers are available to provide additional cushion for glass shelving.

Each standard features evenly spaced slots (at regular intervals) with easy to secure clips and the added convenience of numbered markings to make it more convenient to position clips for level positioning.

The width is generally around ⅝ inch, and they can hold brackets for shelves with depths from about 8 to 15 inches depending on intended use.

Key Benefits

Enables custom shelf height arrangement without tools-simply lift and reposition brackets.

Provides strong, reliable support for shelves, especially in storage and retail settings

What is the longest recommended length of a glass shelf using shelf standards?

The maximum recommended length for a glass shelf supported by this type of system depends on the glass thickness and the intended load the shelf needs to support. Generally speaking, you should plan your glass shelves to be shorter or designed with more supports along its length as compared to wood, glass is more brittle and prone to deflection or breakage.

Here are the maximum recommended spans for single pane tempered glass shelves to prevent noticeable sag, assuming adequate support brackets are used:

Glass Thickness:

1/4" (6 mm)

Maximum Recommended Span (Distance Between Brackets): 18 inches

Suitable for very light loads (toiletries, small décor).

3/8" (10 mm)

Maximum Recommended Span (Distance Between Brackets): 24 to 30 inches

Most common residential thickness; often sufficient for display items.

1/2" (12 mm)

Maximum Recommended Span (Distance Between Brackets):: 36 inches

Recommended minimum for heavier objects, kitchens, or medium spans.

5/8" or 3/4" (16 to 19 mm)

Maximum Recommended Span (Distance Between Brackets): 40 to 48 inches

Used for heavy loads (books, appliances, large collections) or long spans.

Key Considerations for Manufacturers:

Safety Margin: For shelves exceeding 36", manufacturers should always specify a minimum thickness of 1/2" and require intermediate support brackets positioned at intervals no wider than 24".

Load Distribution: The values above assume the load is evenly distributed across the full length of the shelf. If heavy mass is concentrated at the center of a long glass shelf, it is recommended to have additional brackets or supports to withstand the load.

Tempered Glass is Mandatory: Due to safety regulations and structural requirements, glass shelves supported by adjustable standards must be made of tempered (toughened) glass.

Aesthetic Limit: While a 3/4" shelf could theoretically span 4 feet, the shelf may still experience a slight visual sag under load. For a cleaner look, shorter spans are always recommended.

How many shelf support brackets should I use for various shelf lengths?

Always check the specifications of the brackets to understand how many are required.

If I increase the number of EB-303EP brackets to support my shelf, does that directly multiply the load capacity of a single bracket?

The identified load capacity is for a single bracket, and testing has confirmed the direct multiplication when using 2 or more brackets. Added brackets will increase the overall load capacity, and load is distributed more evenly over the length of the shelf. Additionally, the load capacity is dependent on the substrate that the brackets are mounted on and the fasteners used to secure them. Sugatsune recommends to use fasteners that are included with this product and if mounting on a wall, install them into the studs to ensure a safe installation.
