Frequently Asked Questions

What is a concealed or invisible cabinet hinge?

A concealed cabinet hinge is a hinge designed to connect cabinet doors in a way where the hinge is not visible from the outside of the cabinet when the door is closed. Most commonly today are what are known as European cup hinges in which a cup is designed to be mortised into the backside of the door and a moving arm attaches to a mounting plate that is affixed to the inside of the cabinet. This allows the hinge to facilitate movement of the door from the inside of the cabinet hence keeping it concealed.

Other types of concealed hinges include hidden hinges like Sugatsune's HES3D-70 are designed for inset applications where you want tight reveals that almost make the cabinet appear hidden. They are mortised into the inside edge of the door and also on the cabinet gable hiding the hinge even more than the European cup hinges. There are also pivot hinges that can be mounted on the top and bottom of the cabinet hence concealing them from the outside of the cabinet as well.

How do I choose the right concealed hinge?

Selecting a hinge can seem overwhelming as there are many factors that must be considered before selecting the appropriate hinge. The Size and weight of your doors are important to ensure that you select a hinge that will support and function properly. And of course, the aesthetics you desire may dictate the type of concealed hinge you want to use.

You also will need to know if your cabinets are designed with a face frame or if they are frameless. Traditionally, U.S. cabinets were constructed with a face frame in which a solid wood frame is attached to the front of the cabinet box. More recently, many cabinet makers are following the European designs of a frameless cabinet which have a sleeker, more modern look and more efficient usage of space. Concealed hinges are generally designed to work with frameless cabinets however, face-frame brackets for some hinges are available.

Most critical is determining what hinge overlay you need. The overlay is how much the door covers the cabinet side or frame. Hinges have various measurements but generally you need to know if you want a full overlay which covers the entire side panel thickness (16 to 19 mm), half overlay which is common when two doors close on a shared middle panel (8 to 9.5 mm) or inset which is used when the door closes within the sides of the cabinet.

Are concealed or hidden cabinet hinges adjustable?

Most of our concealed hinges are adjustable, with many offering 3-way adjustability as well as adjustability in the mounting plate to ensure that cabinet doors all align and function properly. We also have soft-closing versions which the 360 Olympia hinge (360-D26) features a 5-speed adjustable soft-close that not only eliminates doors from slamming, but can be dialed in to ensure that doors of different sizes and weights can close at the same speed.
