FAQs

What are the different types of hinges available, and how do I choose the right one for my project?

There are many hinge types, each intended for specific cabinet hinge applications and features. One style is the concealed hinge (more commonly referred to as a European Cup Hinge). It yields a clean and seamless look. It’s hidden from view when the cabinet door is closed. The butt hinge is a popular and classic option for traditional furniture and doors. You can see it from the exterior. It features two leaves joined by a pin. Leaning into a more decorative touch? Surface-mounted options, such as the butterfly hinge, expand your aesthetic choices. When you’re selecting a hinge, first consider the application. The most important factor is to consider the weight and the width of the door to ensure that the appropriate hinge is selected. Then, think about the application; is it a kitchen cabinet or a decorative storage box? Also, consider the desired look (hidden vs viewable). Do remember other functionality requirements you have (e.g., soft-close, self-closing, specific opening angle, etc.). The proper hinge is vital to your cabinet or furniture performing the way it should over time.

Can an overlay hinge work for an inset application?

No, you cannot use an overlay hinge for an inset application. The two terms describe how the cabinet door sits in relation to the cabinet frame. An overlay hinge is designed for applications where the door closes over the cabinet box or face frame of the cabinet. Commonly these are available in ½”, ⅝”, ¾” and 1” overlays. An inset hinge is used for cabinets in which the door fits inside the cabinet opening and sits flush with the face of the cabinet frame or box when closed.

An overlay hinge would fail on an inset application because you risk binding and excessive gapping. Aesthetically, the hinge’s pivot point and mounting geometry would push the door forward and would stick out by at least the thickness of the door and the hinge’s overlay.

Binding: The hinge rotation will cause the door to collide with the frame. The arm of the overlay hinge will attempt to move the door on top of the frame. Since the door is sized to fit inside the frame, the hinge arm will prevent the door from recessing properly.

Gapping: The door will not sit flush. It will protrude, leaving a non-functional gap. The hinge arm cannot pull the door far enough into the cabinet box.

What are the common materials and finishes for hinges, and how do they affect durability and style?

A hinge’s materials and finishes surpass mere visual appeal. They're also key in determining toughness and long-lasting performance. Sugatsune America hinges are fashioned from metals such as stainless steel, brass and even plastic. We like stainless steel for its strength and resistance to rust. It's perfect for areas where moisture builds up. Not as hard as steel, brass is highly decorative and corrosion-resistant. Zinc alloy is another durable hinge material, typical for concealed hinges.

Going beyond base materials, the finish offers protection. It also adds visual appeal. Oil-rubbed bronze hinges imbue a furniture piece with rustic charm. Meanwhile, a chrome finish is ultra-modern and sleekly elegant while matte black is becoming a very popular choice. Need hardware for outdoor or marine uses? Your best bet is hinges formed from high-grade, corrosion-resistant materials like 304 and 316 grade stainless steel or brass. These also often come with specialized coatings. These coatings boost protection against the harshest environmental elements.
