The latest hinge from Sugatsune reduces routing drastically—ideal for retrofits and refined finishes.
The HES2S is the latest in Sugatsune’s evolving line of concealed hinges, and its defining move is a simple one: surface mounting. Traditionally, creating a hidden door meant carefully routing out both the frame and the door—a messy, time-intensive process often impractical for retrofits. This new hinge changes that. Routing only the door side, screws directly into the frame side, eliminating the need for cutting or routing and keeping installation clean and efficient.
“Like we did back in 1992 when we introduced adjustable concealed hinges for doors, the HES2S exemplifies how Sugatsune creates satisfaction and convenience for both professionals and do-it-yourselfers,” said Curtis Nakamura, Senior Vice President at Sugatsune America. “By eliminating the need to route out the frames, you can mortise these hinges into doors at the shop or in the garage, avoiding unnecessary cleanup inside the house.”

That efficiency maintains the level of performance expected from Sugatsune. The HES2S is fully three-way adjustable—horizontally, vertically, and in depth—making it easier to achieve the clean reveal that defines a successful concealed door. Designed to work with 1-3/8-inch-thick doors and thicker, it opens up hidden-door possibilities for standard residential dimensions, allowing architects and builders to integrate minimalist detailing even in existing spaces.
This model supports up to 88 pounds with two hinges, and up to 110 pounds with three. For installers, that means it can carry a substantial solid-core door while remaining virtually invisible. It also pairs easily with shop-based preparation: the door can be mortised off-site, then quickly installed without touching the existing frame—an ideal condition for remodels, where minimizing disruption is essential. Sugatsune also supports the installation process with Denpo's Templates, available on Sugatsune’s website. Sugatsune Hinges are also found in the Shaper Tools’ hardware catalog—offering precision jigs and digital routing aids to ensure clean alignment, especially on larger projects.

Sugatsune has built its reputation on this kind of problem-solving. The company introduced adjustable concealed hinges in 1992, and this surface-mounted iteration expands that legacy by making the look of architectural minimalism easier to achieve. Backed by Sugatsune’s legacy and drive for innovation, the HES2S Hinge removes a long-standing barrier to concealed hardware, translating that expertise into something simpler, cleaner, and more accessible for today’s interiors.
