  • Desk/Furniture-based: Circular or rectangular grommets to be inserted into a cut-out on a surface. These allow cables to pass through, keeping the area tidy. These grommets often come with a removable cap or multiple split openings, allowing for control over the cable bundle size and direction.

  • Zinc alloy: A durable light metal material that provides a more premium aesthetic than commonly used plastic grommets. Silicone rubber offers extreme temperature resistance, both in hot and cold environments. Also excellent for electrical resistance and food-grade uses. Silicone rubber grommets are good in environments where exposure to ozone or UV light is a concern. Consider these for high-heat applications.
  • Plastic: Cost-effective and most commonly used on furniture including office desks, nightstands and other common furniture. Generally resistant to chemicals and abrasion and can be used just about everywhere.

How do I select the correct size grommet?

This is often dictated by the size or number of wires that you are planning to pass through the hole. In addition to the wire, you should consider the size of the plug or end-connector that would also need to pass through the hole.

You want it to be large enough to allow the cables to pass through while small enough to maintain retention or seal as required.

You will also need to consider the overall thickness or maximum panel depth of the material being penetrated so you can find a grommet with the proper dimensions that will work in your application.

It is good to also allow for any future cable extensions or bundling that may be needed to ensure the grommet is not so oversized that the cable can move excessively and chafe.

What are the limitations or considerations when specifying cable grommets?

Selecting the wrong component or not considering certain conditions that the grommet will be used in can lead to issues. It is recommended that you consider the grommet material to ensure that it is compatible with the environment it will be in. For example if you use a standard rubber grommet in high temperature or outdoor areas where it will be exposed to UV it may crack, become brittle, or fail.

If the grommet hold diameter is underspecified for the cable bundle that will be passed through, the cable may chafe which could damage the wire and become a hazard. You should consider that over time, cables may move or vibrate.
